Overview
Rebuilding Myko on a new foundation.
Myko was already Kingfisher’s connected-home app and supported several product categories on a legacy platform. We rebuilt it on a new platform, starting with heating, then used those foundations for the rest of the product range. I led the UX and UI work, managed two designers and worked with product and engineering from planning through delivery.
01.Building the foundation
The existing Myko app
Customers already used Myko to control several types of connected device on the legacy platform.
The new platform launches with heating
The first release combined connected radiators with the new account, home, setup, navigation and voice-integration journeys.
More products join the system
We extended the components and interaction patterns for lighting, switches, mobile air conditioning and security products.
We then used these foundations to move existing Myko customers and devices onto the new platform.

One system, shapedaround each device.
Everything in its place
Homes, rooms and product categories share one clear structure.
Move between spaces
A consistent way to switch and manage connected homes.
Comfort and control
Device-specific modes and temperature controls within the shared system.
Light for the moment
Brightness, colour and mood controls designed around lighting.
Control devices together
Grouped controls make several lights easier to manage without losing individual control.
Clear climate controls
Cooling controls that remain familiar without copying heating.
Putting Boost at the centre
Hot water uses the same programme pattern as other heating devices, but Boost is its only direct control so we made it the focus of the screen.
02.Improving everyday control
Away mode
One action for the whole home.
In the previous app, users activated Away mode on each device individually. We introduced a global Away mode that could be switched on with one button from the home page, with the option to choose which devices participated.
Activated separately in each device’s settings.
One action, with a choice of participating devices.
Energy insights
Making energy use understandable.
Daily summaries lead into detailed views of consumption and temperature, helping people connect how their heating behaves with the energy it uses.

Use Left and Right arrow keys to explore energy consumption. Home and End move to the first and last bars.
Average daily heating runtime 5.3h
Across the ecosystem
Automations bring products together.
The same structure for conditions and actions works across devices with very different capabilities.
People can review their routines at a glance and switch individual automations on or off.
A shared structure makes timing, conditions and actions clear as a routine becomes more complex.
The final step reveals controls specific to the chosen device, such as power, mode and brightness.
Matter onboarding
Making local control clear.
A dedicated Matter route explained local-only control on home Wi-Fi. Either scanner recognised both Matter and Myko QR codes, so choosing a route did not prevent pairing.
03.Connecting design to delivery
I built a connected workspace in Notion, linking design tasks, feature records, releases and testing. The team could follow work from definition through delivery, with test results and issues connected to the design work.
Target and actual delivery stay connected
Release records bring together scope, milestones and linked design work. Target and actual releases stay connected to tasks, while issues link to the release planned for their fix.

04.The future of Myko
While working on the live product, I also explored where Myko could go next. The designs use what we learned from shipping and supporting the app to make the experience simpler and easier to extend.
This direction was not released. The preview shows selected interactions from the proposed design.

What shipped
A foundation for the wider product range.
The new platform launched with connected radiators in September 2025. Its account, home, setup and control patterns became the foundation for the other product categories. The future designs shown above remained an unreleased direction.
